At present, most of the colored knife handles are made of stable wood, so there is such a rich color choice. here comes another problem, what is stabilized wood? And how does it be made?

What is stabilized wood?

Stabilized wood is a kind of high density wood, After a special process, it presents a unique texture and gorgeous color.

The principle of the stabilization process is as follows: the wood’s curing process is to extract the air in the wood with a vacuum pump, then fill the voids with resin and dyes, and change the nature of the wood from cork to a high hardness wood.

What’s advantages of the stabilized wood?

1. More moisture resistant, durable

Compared with untreated wood. It is more moisture resistant, durable and much less prone to warping, chips or cracking. beacause the stabilizing process changed the nature of the wood made it can last longer time.

2. Visually elegance

During the stabilization process, adding different dyes to change the color of the wood itself with a special dyeing method. This color is basically permanent and does not fade. Ordinary dyed wood will change color or yellow and rot over a long time, while stable wood will not.

3.Unique grain

the grain made by most stable woods is natural and it's formed with tree growth for many years. Therefore, it is impossible to have the exactly same pattern. If you want to make a special color, you can add dyes you want.

What’s disadvantages of the stabilized wood?

1. High scrap rate and the low yield rate.

There are two main reasons:

First, the production process of stabilizing wood looks very simple, but it is very complicated to make it. the wood must be dried first, after drying, the wood is cured. The air inside is exhausted by a vacuum pump. After drying, some dyes and resin are filled into the wood, and then the pattern of the wood is highlighted. The color matching is very important. If the matching is not good, the wood will appear dull and ordinary, if the pattern is not highlighted, so the wood is scrapped. Every step of the treatment is very important, and the wood cannot be used if you are made mistakes in one step.

Second, after processing, the wood can be made into the desired shape, but the wood is wood after all. Although it has been cured, some characteristics of the wood still exist. During the production process, the wood will be directly scrapped if it encounters water or exposure to the sun. Moreover, the wood is a one-time finished product, and it cannot be restored to a whole piece of solidified wood after being cut. Therefore, it cannot be reused it the size deviation caused by careless cutting happens, and the wood will be scrapped too.

2. It’s expensive.

Stabilized wood generally uses older maple or birch. The conditions for picking this kind of raw material are very difficult. You need to go deep into the mountains, and you may not be able to find one appropriate tree from 100 trees. Therefore, it leads to an expensive price. as mentioned above, the complicated process also leads to expensive price.

How does stabilized wood be made?

Make preparation,Before you start stabilized process ,you have to prepare these tools:

1. Vacuum chamber

The vacuum chamber is used to evacuate wood and make the stabilizing agent penetrate into the center of the wood. When there is no professional vacuum chamber, it can also be a standard pressure tank or a transparent sealed box made of acrylic.

2. Stabilizing agent

3. Oven

Some epoxy resins or thermosetting stabilizers need to be cured at the appropriate temperature.

4. Air pump

5. Pressure tank

For professional stabilization treatment, a pressure tank is also needed. if the stabilized agent can't enter wood in vacuum chamber, high pressure is required to send the stabilizing agent into the wood center. How much pressure needed depends on wood’s density.

The first step is to use an oven to dry the wood to remove the moisture until moisture contains below 3%, but be aware that some wood will crack if the moisture is too low, so you need to try a few more times.

The second step is to place the wood and stabilizing agent in the vacuum chamber. The wood immersed in the stabilizing agent will bubbling. Generally, it is best to take 30 minutes or more until there’s no bubbles. In this process, if the stabilizing agent can’t penetrate wood completely. you can use pressure tank to help. (especially for color ~ pump once and press once).

The third step is to take out the wood and drain it, wrap the wood with tin foil and put it in the oven. Bake at a constant temperature of 120-130°C for 10-15 minutes, depending on the size of your wood. Larger wood requires longer time to dry, This process is called heat curing.

The fourth step is to polish the stabilized wood into the shape you want.
